That if you confess with your mouth the Lord YAHshúa and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, "Whoever believes on Him[YAHshúa-Christ] will not be put to shame." EL (DEITY): THE ANCIENT SEMITIC FOUNDATION

Linguistic Origins & Historical Development

The word "El" is a Northwest Semitic term meaning "god" or "deity," appearing as a proper name for the supreme god of ancient Canaanite religion.

The Supreme Deity of the Levant

Historical Context: Originating in the Early Dynastic Period of Mesopotamia (c. 2900 – c. 2350 BCE), **El** was regarded as the father of the gods and the creator of humanity. In Ugaritic and Levantine mythology, he presided over a council of gods and was often depicted as a kingly, wise figure.

Linguistic Forms and Meanings

The Semitic root 'lh (Arabic: ilāh; Aramaic: Alāh; Hebrew: elōah) is fundamentally tied to the stem 'l.

  • Generic vs. Specific: In Northwest Semitic use, 'el served as a generic word for any god, but also as the specific title for the head of the pantheon.
  • Biblical Transition: Scholars note that in early Israelite religion, YAHWEH absorbed many characteristics of El, eventually merging identities as the faith transitioned into strict monotheism.
  • Genealogy: In Canaanite sources, El is the consort of Asherah and father to major deities like Baal, Yam, and Mot.

Note: Archaeological texts show that while the title "El" is ancient and widespread, its evolution into the monotheistic "Allah" of the 7th century AD lacks direct archaeological continuity. The name of YAHWEH stands apart as the specific revealed name of the God of Israel.

AL-LAT: PRE-ISLAMIC ORIGINS VS ISLAMIC TRADITION

Understanding the Distinction

Historical and archaeological evidence confirms that Al-Lat was a distinct female deity worshipped long before the emergence of Islam.

The Identity of Al-Lat

Origin: Al-Lat (Arabic: اللات) was a pre-Islamic Arabian goddess, widely worshipped across the Arabian Peninsula, including Mecca. She was traditionally known as one of the three "daughters of Allah" in pagan Arab mythology, alongside Al-Uzza and Manat.

Why Al-Lat is NOT the "Allah" of 610 AD

It is crucial to distinguish between this ancient deity and the monotheistic "Allah" introduced by Muhammad in 610 AD:

  • Chronological Gap: The worship of Al-Lat is attested in inscriptions from the 5th century BC (Herodotus), whereas the Islamic concept of Allah was established over a millennium later.
  • Theological Conflict: Muhammad's message was strictly monotheistic and aimed to destroy the polytheistic worship of the "daughters," including Al-Lat. In fact, Islamic tradition records that the temple of Al-Lat in Ta'if was demolished on Muhammad's orders in the 7th century AD.
  • Etymological Root: While some suggest "Al-Lat" is a feminine form of the word for deity, she functioned as a goddess of war and fertility, fundamentally different from the "Lord of the Worlds" described in the Quran.

Critical Conclusion: Archaeological remains prove that Al-Lat was part of a polytheistic system that Islam sought to eradicate. The "Allah" introduced in 610 AD was a new theological construct that broke away from the ancient Semitic triad of Al-Lat, Al-Uzza, and Manat.
